Earning your associate's or bachelor's degree and then passing your NCLEX-RN exam certifies you to work as a registered nurse, but you can then choose one specific area to focus your talents on by being a pediatric RN. You will then need to study further for a master's degree and become an advanced nurse practitioner with a focus on pediatrics.
In this job, you will work with infants, children and teenagers as well as their families and must be able to relate to them but also communicate well with their parents or guardians. This is not the job for everyone, because your character must help put children at ease while still using your knowledge of child development and growth patterns to inform and educate parents. Your role will vary and you need to be strong and supportive no matter who you are dealing with; child or adult.
Job Options
Pediatric RN involves helping, educating and promoting health in children. They have to not only care for and teach children and their parents about proper nutrition, ailments and perhaps certain illnesses, but they sometimes have to act as a child advocate, fighting on behalf of the child's well-being and perhaps even hold interventions.
Because helping the child also means helping the family, pediatric nurses can take jobs in schools, hospitals or even make house calls. There are also various pediatric careers to consider. You can choose to not only specialize in children, but specialize even further by focusing on pediatric oncology, acute care or pediatric orthopedics for example.
Career Prospects
There will continue to be many employment opportunities within the field of pediatric nursing until 2016, with an expected increase of about 23% for all jobs. There are many nurses retiring that must be replaced quickly which attributes the rapid growth.
Also, having an advanced degree will open more opportunities and put you ahead of the competition in this field where an associate's degree is the minimum to get in. Pediatric nursing careers are quite stable and in demand, and the average salary can attest to that; ranging from about $60,000-70,000 a year.
A pediatric RN is a lucrative career choice, but more importantly, it is an option that will allow you to help and comfort sick children. You can also ease their families with the information you can provide while caring for their children as needed. There is nothing more rewarding than spending your day helping someone, and when that someone is a child, it is worth all the difficulty.
